[0036] Handled Granule Preparation
[0037] The sample preparation method for experimental testing is as follows. A small plastic or glass container is placed on the digital balance and the balance is zeroed. Approximately 1 oz. (approximately 29.5 ml or 35 grams) of the treatment solution to be tested is placed into the container. Then the balance returns to zero. 100 g of calcined kaolin roofing granules were added to the container. The container is then covered with a lid. Shake the container containing the kaolin roofing granules and treatment solution vigorously to ensure that the treatment completely covers the granules. Next, the treated pellets were removed and spread evenly on a foil tray. The trays containing the treated pellets were placed in an oven preheated to 80°C, and the treated pellets were dried overnight. Remove the treated pellets from the oven and allow to cool for several hours. The purpose of cooling the treated particles is to ensure that the pa...

[0042] Reflectivity
[0043] The reflectance of each treated sample was determined using a D&S reflectometer, model SSR-ER version 6 (Equipment and Services, Inc., Dallas, TX). For this test using a reflectometer, approximately 100 g of the treated sample is placed on a sample receiving tray. Smooth the sample so that the surface of the sample in the pan is approximately level. Cycle the reflectometer by taking 1-2 measurements per cycle at each measurement location. A total of five measurement positions are used. The measurement locations represent four points on the compass (North, South, East, and West), with a fifth measurement being taken at the center of the sample pan. The reflectance readings at each of the five measurement locations were averaged together to obtain an average reflectance for each treated individual sample. The average reflectance of each treated individual sample is described in Table 3 below.

[0047] Water resistance test
[0048] Water resistance is a frequently used quality control test in the roofing pellet industry. Having hydrophobic roofing particles is important because hydrophilic particles may appear to have difficulty adhering to asphalt-based substrates. When applying roofing granules to an asphalt-based substrate, water can then be sprayed onto the hot asphalt to cool the heated substrate. If the roofing particles are hydrophilic, water may be present between the particles and the substrate, thus preventing the particles from adhering to the asphalt-based substrate.
[0049] Each of the particles used in the water resistance test was treated with the solution according to the method described above so that the weight of the treatment solution divided by the weight of the particles was 2% by weight. Use a 0.67% dilution to treat products treated with SILRES BS3003. A 0.67% dilution was prepared by weighing 45g of deionized water into a container and we...
