Abstract

The invention provides a congestion avoidance method based on weighted random early detection (WRED) and a system thereof. The method comprises the following steps: dividing a supported data packet length range into several intervals; setting different equivalent packet lengths for each interval; according to a receiving data packet length, searching an ownership interval of the receiving data packet, and determining the equivalent packet length of the receiving data packet according to the ownership interval which is found; according to a formula, calculating a dropping probability of the receiving data packet, wherein packet_size_new indicates the equivalent packet length, max_packet_size indicates the maximum packet length of the supported data packet, avg_q_length indicates an average depth of a queue, max_th indicates a maximum threshold value of the average depth of the queue, min_th indicates a minimum threshold value of the average depth of the queue, maxp indicates the maximum dropping probability maxp of the receiving data packet; determining whether to send the receiving data packet to the queue according to calculated dropping probability. By using the method and the system of the invention, the dropping probability of a short packet can be increased.
