Problems solved by technology

If these animals are diverted to more distant grazing pastures or if they are never allowed to get close to the milking area, then the likelihood that the animals will visit the milking area again soon is low and therefore, milk production will be lower

Embodiment Construction

[0026] figure 1 Schematic illustration of a pasture-based livestock facility for penning livestock that is permitted to move within an area 11 of the facility. Area 11 preferably includes a large number of grazing pastures 12 where livestock can graze, a milking area 13 remote from grazing pasture 12, a plurality of passages 14a-14c, and a pre-milking and post-milking area 15 in which animals can pass through multiple Each channel 14a-14c and the pre-milk and post-milk area 15 enter and exit the milking area 13. The milking area 13 comprises an automatic rotary milking system 16 which is preferably used for voluntary milking of animals which have entered the milking area 13 during a milking session. During such milking tasks, the automated rotary milking system 16 can pre-treat, milk and post-treat the animals in the milking area 13 . Alternatively, the pre-treatment and / or post-treatment may be carried out in separate pre- and post-treatment devices present in the milking ...

Abstract

An arrangement for control of the milking of animals which are allowed to move in an area (11) intended therefore is provided. The area includes a milking area (13) with an automatic milking system (16). The arrangement comprises at least one animal identification device (21c) for identifying each of the animals that enters the milking area, and a process and control device (17) operatively connected to the animal identification device. The process and control device determines, for each of the identified animals, an expected milk yield obtainable in milking that animal, determines repeatedly an accumulated expected milk yield obtainable in milking the identified animals based on the expected milk yields of the identified animals, and initiates a milking session depending on the repeatedly determined accumulated expected milk yield.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for controlling the milking of livestock by an automatic milking system. Background technique [0002] Automatic milking systems (AMS) are well known in the art. Current implementations of AMS almost exclusively have penned cows. The cows are housed in a large barn that also houses the AMS. Cows learn to walk freely between their stalls and the AMS unit for short distances, the main motivation being the rearing within the moving gates when the cows are being milked in the AMS. Cows only need to move a relatively short distance (maybe 20-30m to AMS in a pen system). [0003] Many dairy cows around the world are not penned in this way, but are allowed to graze freely on pastures. Especially in Australia and New Zealand, there are no pens for cows, they spend all their time on pasture. These pasture-based systems are very extensive, often requiring cows to travel considerable distances to be mil...
