[0014] It was revealed here that it could be introduced into a bacterial host with genes encoding two enzymes, thereby endowing the host with the ability to produce 3-HP from glycerol. The two essential enzymes are glycerol dehydrogenase and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase. It is reported here that these two enzymes are necessary and sufficient to make suitable host strains, such as E. coli strains competent, from glycerol to 3-HP. An exemplary gene encoding glycerol dehydratase is known, DHAB Klebsiella pneumoniae, the gene was sequenced and presented for convenience. Several exemplary aldehyde dehydrogenases are known, and their sequences are presented here. From this information, it becomes possible to confer the ability to actually convert glycerol to 3-HP in a commercially reasonable manner to the bacterial host.
[0015] It was not seen before the work described here that these two distinct enzymes could be manufactured in a common host to produce the ability to make 3-HP. ...
