Embodiment Construction

[0015] The present invention relates to a machine equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) operatively connected to a driven element and transmitting mechanical power from a prime mover power source to the driven element. CVTs may sometimes be referred to as Infinitely Variable Transmissions (ITVs), however, the present invention relates to both of these transmissions, as well as any similar type of transmission, regardless of the nomenclature. As used herein, the term "machine" may refer to any type of machine that performs some operation associated with an industry such as mining, construction, agriculture, transportation, or any other industry known in the art. Additionally, the tool can be attached to the machine. Such tools can be used for a variety of work tasks (including, for example, loading, compacting, lifting, brushing) and include, for example, buckets, compaction tools, fork lifts, brushes, grapples, knives, scissors, shovels, Breakers / hammers, a...

Abstract

A system and method involves a machine (100) having a drive train (108) including a continuously variable transmission (CVT) (110) associated with a plurality of virtual gear ratios. To switch between multiple virtual gear ratios, the machine (100) may include an operator input device (240) moveable between multiple different positions. The first position (260) may be associated with a neutral position in which no switching of virtual gear ratios occurs. The second position (262) of the operator input device (240) may be associated with a first rate of increase for switching between virtual gear ratios. The third position (264) may be associated with a second rate of increase for switching between virtual gear ratios, the second rate of increase being different than the first rate of increase.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a machine equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), and more particularly to a CVT adapted to operate in one or more discrete virtual gear ratios. Background technique [0002] Many machines use a transmission to connect the output of a prime mover or power source (such as an internal combustion engine) to a driven element or device (such as a wheel or work tool). Conventional transmissions typically include one or more fixed, selectively engageable gear ratios that increase or decrease the speed of the prime mover and typically increase or decrease torque in an inverse relationship. A specific gear ratio typically corresponds to a discrete and known speed range of the driven device such that selection of the specific gear ratio will enable operation of the driven device within that speed range. Accordingly, changing the desired speed and / or torque may require changing the gear ratio, which ma...
