Embodiment Construction

[0016] now refer to figure 2 , shows an infusion pump 10, such as a linear peristaltic infusion pump. The infusion pump 10 includes at least one pumping device or mechanism 12 and a controller 14, such as a computerized device, having at least a memory 16, a processor 18, one or more sensors 20, an input device 22, a display 24, and preferably Network or other communication interface 26 . Power source 28 is also preferably incorporated into infusion pump 10 .

[0017] Pumping device 12 may be any pumping mechanism used to assist fluid flow in a bulk infusion pump. As a non-limiting example, linear peristaltic pumps are considered suitable and discussed here. Other non-limiting examples include multi-finger peristaltic pumping mechanisms, single-finger peristaltic pumping mechanisms, and rotary pumps that act on the length of the tube to push fluid through the tube.

Abstract

An infusion pump (10) for pumping fluid at a constant flow rate through a drug delivery device. The pump includes a pumping mechanism (12) for pumping fluid and operating at a pulse frequency, and a controller (14) that controls the pulse frequency. In addition, the pump has one or more sensors (20) configured to measure at least one characteristic value related to the state of the infusion pump. The controller (14) is configured such that the pumping mechanism (12) operates at a first pulse frequency and the one or more sensors (20) intermittently measure the characteristic value. The controller (14) causes the pumping mechanism (12) to operate at a second pulse frequency different from the first pulse frequency when the measured characteristic value reaches a threshold value.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods of drug delivery, and more particularly to methods of precisely delivering drugs over long durations of time via infusion pumps. Background technique [0002] Various medicines can be provided to patients through infusion pumps such as peristaltic pump assisted infusion. Peristaltic pumps are typically operated by direct manipulation of the drug delivery device. Over time, this manipulation leads to physical degradation of the drug delivery device in the area where the infusion pump is manipulated. That is, physical manipulation of the dosing device by the peristaltic pump for prolonged periods of time results in recoil or reduced flexibility of the dosing device tube, thus reducing the volume of fluid in each pumping cycle. Such as figure 1 As shown, using conventional pump technology results in an unacceptable change in the percent error of the pumped flow rate as the pumping duration increases. [0003] I...
