The method comprises steps: each frame of image in an input video stream is captured; the mean of each frame of image is calculated; when the flag of a previous frame is 0, statistics on whether means of continuous N frames of images are all smaller than a first threshold X1 is carried out, if requirements are met, adaptive gamma enhancement processing is carried out, or otherwise, a result is outputted directly; and when the flag of the previous frame is detected to be 1, statistics on whether means of continuous N frames of images are all larger than a second threshold X2 is carried out, if requirements are met, enhancement processing is quitted and the result is outputted directly, or otherwise, enhancement processing is continued to be carried out. Through actual measurement, at night and other low-illumination environment, the enhancement function can be started adaptively through an algorithm; the enhancement function is closed automatically in a strong light condition; and many low-illumination enhancement algorithms can be automatically started and closed through the intelligent mode.
