Problems solved by technology

[0023] One of the problems with this configuration is that the three heat exchange steps take place in the same tube, so the design of the heat exchanger cannot be optimized for all three steps at the same time
[0025] Low velocity at the inlet can lead to fouling deposits and high velocity of steam at the outlet can create excessive pressure drop

Embodiment Construction

[0070] According to a first aspect of the invention, the invention relates to an evaporator for transferring heat from a hot gas to a liquid which raises its temperature, changes phase and leaves as superheated vapour.

[0071] In an embodiment, the hot gas identified as the second fluid is exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine. In these embodiments, the first fluid is ethanol. Ethanol enters the interior of the evaporator in the liquid phase. Heat transfer from the second fluid to the first fluid results in: In a first step, the temperature of the first fluid increases until it reaches the boiling temperature; in a second step, the first fluid changes phase, keeping the temperature approximately equal to the boiling temperature ; and in the third step, in the gas phase, the temperature is further increased.

[0072] In this embodiment, superheated ethanol vapor is used in a Rankine cycle to generate mechanical energy, recovering part of the heat from the exhaust gase...

Abstract

The present invention is a cross-flow evaporator adapted to generate vapor from the heat of the exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine. The evaporator is constituted, among other elements, by two plates (1, 2) spaced from one another which contain chambers (1.1, 2.1). The heat exchange tubes (3) alternately communicate the chambers (1.1, 2.1) of both plates (1, 2) , establishing a specific path for the fluid intended to change phase. The tubes (3) extending between the chambers (1.1, 2.1) of the two plates (1, 2) are arranged transverse to the flow of the hot gas. This evaporator is suitable for heat recovery systems using a Rankine cycle, making use of the heat from the exhaust gases. The invention is characterized by a special configuration of the walls (2) which prevents the crack failure or damage caused as a result of the differential expansion between the exchange tubes (3) and said walls (2).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a cross-flow evaporator suitable for generating steam from the heat of exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine. Among other elements, the evaporator consists of two plates, spaced apart from each other, containing the chamber. Heat exchange tubes alternately communicate with the chambers of the two plates, creating specific paths for the fluids used for the phase change. Tubes extending between the chambers of the two plates are arranged transversely to the hot gas flow. [0002] The evaporator is suitable for heat recovery systems using the Rankine cycle, which utilizes the heat from the exhaust gas. [0003] The invention is characterized by a special configuration of the wall which prevents crack failure or damage due to differential expansion between the heat exchange tubes and said wall. Background technique [0004] A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer heat from a first hot fluid to a second f...
