Problems solved by technology

Therefore, this device also relies on the rotation of the relatively heavy mandrel in order to apply the composite material circumferentially inwardly of the tool surface, thus presenting many disadvantages of the production technique where the composite material is applied to the outer tool surface of the rotating mandrel.

Embodiment Construction

[0109] first reference figure 1 , the disclosed embodiments relate to an apparatus 20 for laying up a composite structure of revolution on an OML mold tool 26 , sometimes referred to herein as an OML mold 26 . As used herein, "body of revolution" refers to a structure obtained by rotating a plane or a complex curved surface (not shown) about an axis (not shown) lying in the same plane. In the illustrated embodiment, the rotor is disclosed as a cylindrical structure, such as figure 2 A cylindrical portion 44 is shown in , however other bodies of revolution are contemplated, such as, but not limited to, frustums (not shown).

[0110] figure 2 The cylindrical composite section 44 shown in may form part of an aircraft fuselage (not shown), comprising a plurality of laminated plies (not shown) laid up on the OML tool 26 . The barrel section 44 may include individual ply sections 46 that form ply doublers or reinforcements. For the sake of brevity and convenience of descriptio...

Abstract

The invention relates to a body-of-revolution composite structure, which is fabricated by providing an OML mold having an interior tool surface on which a composite layup may be formed and moving a manipulator through the interior of the mold. An end-effector on the manipulator is used to apply composite material to the tool surface, and is moved circumferentially over the tool surface.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of the Chinese patent application 201110282077.9 with the filing date of September 16, 2011, and the title of the invention is "Method and Apparatus for Laying Cylindrical Composite Structures". technical field [0002] The present invention relates generally to the manufacture of composite parts, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for laying up tubular composite structures, such as aircraft fuselage sections. Background technique [0003] A composite structure of revolution, such as a fuselage barrel section, can be laid up on the outer tooling surface of the mandrel, which represents the inner mold line (IML) of the finished structure. An automated fiber placement (AFP) machine can be used to lay down composite material in the form of fiber tapes or tows on the tool surface while the mandrel is rotating. These spindles are self-supporting and must function under the forces exerted by both the AFP machine tool ...
