Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure provide systems and methods for establishing one or more distributed gateways located near a UE location to facilitate faster delivery of packets to the UE during transitions. Such transitions may include the UE transitioning its state, for example from idle to connected to a network, and may include operations that cause the UE's serving AP to change. The method includes establishing at least two virtual network function (VNF) components (Virtual Network Function Components, VNFC) of a distributed gateway (Distributed Gateway, D-GW), each VNFC and an access point (Access Point , AP) associated. Each VNFC will cache packets directed to the wireless device. The method also includes selecting at least one AP for serving the wireless device and forwarding cached packets from a VNFC associated with the selected AP to the selected AP for forwarding to the wireless device.
