[0046] The injection device described herein is constructed to have a compact size so that the user can easily carry it or keep it around by packing it in, for example, a backpack, belt clip, bracelet, or necklace. When activated, the plunger can extend proximally and the needle can extend distally to facilitate injection of the drug. In some embodiments, the length of the device in the compact or storage configuration may range from about 60 mm to about 70 mm, about 50 mm to about 80 mm, or about 62 mm to about 66 mm. The diameter may be in the range of about 18 mm to about 26 mm, about 16 mm to about 31 mm, or about 21 mm to about 25 mm. When the device is activated, the length may increase to a range of about 100 mm to about 110 mm, about 90 mm to about 120 mm, or about 103 mm to about 105 mm. Abstract

Devices and methods are provided for a compact injector having a compact configuration for easy portability or storage and an activated configuration ready for injection. In the compact configuration, both the plunger and needle are retracted into the syringe housing, and when actuated to the activated configuration, the plunger extends proximally and the needle extends distally in preparation for injection . An extendable needle shield is also provided to block visibility of the needle during injection and reduce the risk of accidental needle stick injuries at other times, including when discarding.
