Embodiment Construction

[0032] With reference to the accompanying drawings, an embodiment of a device for engaging a tubular heater 11 according to the invention is explained, generally as Figure 4 Shown in 10.

[0033] see Figure 1-4, the tube heater 11 is a conventional heating device that provides a heat source, and includes a heatable portion 20 connected to a cold portion 22 . The heatable portion 20 is provided with means for generating heat and comprises a long outer flare 78 with an insulating filler 86 surrounding a conventional heating element 84 extending along the length of the heatable portion 20, while the cold portion 22 is conductive for supplying heat. The heatable portion 20 provides a current of electrical energy and includes a similarly shaped outer sheath 88 also having an insulating filler 86 and a cold pin 94 connectable to a power source (not shown). The joint achieved by the joint device 10 not only provides a welded connection between the heating element 84 and the cold ...

Abstract

An apparatus (10) for splicing a heatable section (20) of a tubular heater (12) to a cold section, (22) with the heatable section (20) having an outer sheath (78), which has a heating element (84) therein, while the cold section (22) has an outer sheath (88) which includes a cold pin (94). The apparatus (10) comprises an enclosure (12) defining a chamber (62) which further defines opposed openings in communication with the chamber (62). A welding tip (130) extends into the chamber (62) and is capable of melting the cold pin (94) and welding the ends (80,90) of the heatable and cold sections (20,22) together in a splicing operation.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention involves joining two different parts of a tubular heater. More specifically, the present invention relates to a method for coupling an end of a cold pin section to a section having a coil of a heating element without additional components or special preparation of the end of the heater section. Methods and apparatus for connecting the ends together. Background technique [0002] Typically, heaters consist of an inner metal resistive coil, referred to as a heating element, surrounded by an insulating filler which is surrounded by an outer metal sheath. Such heaters are well known in the art. These heaters are constructed using a sheath made of circular metal tubing. Sometimes referred to as "tube heaters" even though the sheath is rolled or flattened after manufacture. [0003] In many applications it is necessary to provide a tube heater having at least one heatable ("heatable") section and at least one non-heated ("cold") sec...
