Embodiment Construction

[0019] refer to figure 1 , composite article 10 includes a core 12 of absorbent material such as paper and carboxymethylcellulose. The cover gum web 14 overlies the body contacting side of the absorbent pad of material 12 and the garment front side of the pad 22 . Covering plastic web 14 is made of a biodegradable material such as rayon or viscose so as to biodegrade after it is disposed of. The underlayment 22 is made from three layers 16 , 18 and 20 . The first layer 16 next to the core was made of 5.6 gsm polyvinyl acetate (PVA) polymer beads. One source of PVA polymer beads are commercially available from McGean Specialty Chemicals Group of Cleveland, Ohio. The beads are applied by a flexographic printer as a solid solution in a solvent. After the solvent evaporates, a water-impermeable layer forms. Typically 2 applications are required as the first creates pinholes to balance membrane integrity.

[0020] The second layer 18 is polyvinyl alcohol and is partially hydr...

Abstract

A flushable bodily liquid absorbent composite product, having a bodily liquid absorbent core and a backing layer applied to a garment side of the core. The backing layer is readily soluble in cold water and has a water impervious layer on its core side and a water resistant layer on its garment facing side.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to body fluid absorbent composite articles such as women's underwear, wound dressings, chest pads, adult incontinence pouches, ostomy bags, pet care products, training pads, dog diapers and sanitary napkins. Background technique [0002] Plastic baby diapers, and the disposal of bodily fluid absorbent products at landfill sites are no longer viable long-term options. Often such materials pose a biohazard hazard and their handling requires minimal risk of human contact. It may be particularly beneficial to the environment to biodegrade these products first rather than retaining them in their current form. [0003] One option, which has been documented in a number of previous patents, is the development of composite articles that can be dispersed in sewage engineering systems. This product often relies on barrier biodegradation for dispersion, and its disposal in wastewater runs the risk of clogging sewerage systems becaus...
