Embodiment Construction

[0014] figure 1 is a block diagram of an embodiment of a system 100 implemented to determine at least one parameter related to a train passing on a railway track 105 . 'Train' as used herein means one or more trains of locomotives with or without coupled passenger or freight cars. The system includes: a sensor 110 coupled to a detection location and configured to sense an acoustic signal at a detection location on a railway track; and a processor 140 coupled to the sensor and configured to for analyzing the time series corresponding to the frequency spectrum of the acoustic signal. In an embodiment, the detection location is on a rail of a railway track. In one embodiment, the system also includes an analog-to-digital converter 130 . Processor 140 may include an analog processor, a digital processor, or a combination thereof. Each component is described in further detail below.

Abstract

A system and method for determining at least one parameter related to a train traversing on a railway track is provided. The system comprises a sensor coupled to a detection location and configured for sensing acoustic signals at the detection location on the railway track and a processor coupled to the sensor and configured for analyzing a temporal progression of a frequency spectrum corresponding to the acoustic signals

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to railway conditions, and more particularly to a system and method for determining at least one parameter related to a train traveling on a railway track and the condition of the track. Background technique [0002] In many applications, it is desirable to monitor the position and status of trains and the status and safety of railway tracks. There are many methods for monitoring the safety of railway tracks and detecting any breaks in the rails. A common approach is the use of electronic track circuits in predetermined sections or blocks of track, where the lack of electrical continuity is used as an indication of a rail break. [0003] One problem with track circuits is that they are not completely accurate and effective in detecting broken rails. Severe localized fractures in rails may still provide sufficient electrical paths to evade detection. Integral separation of the rails due to thermal expansion or ...
