This embodiment is a spreader assembly comprising two spreader units 1 , 3 (which will be referred to simply as "spreaders" from now on). Each spreader 1 , 3 comprises a respective brake wheel unit 11 , 31 . The connecting frame 2 extends between the brake wheel units 11 , 31 . The brake wheel unit comprises pulleys 111, 112, 113, 114, 311, 312, 313, 314 by means of which the spreader assembly is suspended by cables from under the traverse trolley (not shown). As with traditional systems, the traversing trolley is usually mounted on rails on the crane. The positional relationship between the hanger crosspieces 1 and 3 and the traverse trolley is controlled by the movement of the cables. Abstract

A spreader assembly for a crane includes a pair of spreaders which are connected by a linking frame and suspended under a trolley. The configuration of the linking frame can be configured using hydraulic cylinders to move the spreaders relatively, so that the spreaders may be used at the same time to carry containers. The linking frame can also be connected to a docking station mounted on the trolley, and either one of the spreaders released from the linking frame for independent use.
