Abstract

A method and system for simply and flexibly converting a received code point to any of a variety of encodings is provided for a printer controller in a printing system. The code page data structures commonly practiced in the art are enhanced to convert received code points from a first encoding to any of a variety of resulting encodings. In one aspect, the enhanced code page data structure may include a mapping of received code points to any number of Unicode scalar values. On the other hand, when no Unicode code points are available, the enhanced code page may provide a second mapping through the existing code page and character name data structures to identify the corresponding glyphs imaged on the printable medium.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of printing systems, and in particular to a method and system for performing multiple encodings for code points in a code page, which are often used in printing systems. Background technique [0002] Printing systems associated with data processing enterprises typically include localized printer controllers within the printing system. The printer controller controls the overall operation of the printing system, including, for example, host interface, page description language interpretation and rasterization, and low-level process control or interface features of a print engine associated with the printing system. Host interaction may include coupling the printing system to appropriate adapters of one or more host systems using one or more communication media and one or more communication protocols. A printing system receives print jobs (often referred to as "raw print jobs") from one or more attached host co...
