Embodiment Construction

[0016] figure 1 A typical accessory drive system 10 for automotive internal combustion engine applications is described in which the tensioner 26 of the present invention may be employed. But its applications are not limited to automotive applications. Rather, it is applicable to any internal combustion engine that has a power transmission belt drive for transmitting power and would benefit from the inclusion of the tensioner 26 of the present invention. System 10 includes alternator 12 , alternator pulley 14 , power steering pump pulley 18 , water pump pulley 20 , crankshaft pulley 22 , power transmission belt 24 , and tensioner 26 . The alternator 22 is mounted on a base 28 which forms part of a tensioner 26 . The embodiment depicted in the figures includes a base 28 for mounting an engine (not shown) thereon and has mounting points for supporting the alternator 12 or other accessories. However, a base 28 without mounting points for supporting the alternator 12 or other a...

Abstract

The present invention relates to an improved tensioner for tensioning power transmission belts. It is of the type having a pulley adapted to couple with the surface of a power transmission belt; an arm supporting the pulley on which the pulley is rotatably mounted through a pulley bearing; and a shaft supporting the arm. The shaft is rotatably supported by pivot bearings. Furthermore, it is of the type that has a strut attachment point to which the strut is attached. The improvement is that the pulley and connection point are laterally offset relative to the pivot bearing and are substantially balanced with respect to additional torque across the pivot bearing.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to a tensioner for tensioning a belt of a power transmission belt drive system. More particularly, it relates to a tensioner having arcuate motion and a strut as a deflection member or deflection changing member. More particularly, the present invention relates to a tensioner having a geometry that reduces unbalance of the pivot across the center of arcuate motion. Background technique [0002] Power transmission belt tensioners for use in conjunction with power transmission accessory belt drive systems in internal combustion engines are known to have an arcuate pulley motion and include struts for offsetting or changing the offset of the pulley, which rests against the belt so that Controls the tension of the system's belt drive. Typically, the connection points of the pulley, the pivot about which the tensioner body rotates in operation, and the strut are all coplanar. An example of such a coplanar arrangeme...
