Embodiment Construction

[0019] As noted, computed tomography (CT) uses a set of x-ray projections through an object to reconstruct a density image of the object. Cost-effective back-projection of tomographic images is now feasible using off-the-shelf components. Embodiments of a hybrid CPU / graphics card are described herein that accelerate, for example, backprojection of CT images for fan beam, cone beam, helical fan beam, and helical cone beam acquisitions. Specifically, described here is a hybrid approach that uses, for example, the red, green and blue channels of an available multi-color rendering engine in combination with CPU processing of raw projection (sinogram) data. Required preprocessing and post-accumulation, backprojection image data processing to enhance performance. Using the principles presented here, low-cost CPU workstations constructed with common off-the-shelf graphics hardware can be used to reconstruct e.g. fan and cone-beam tomographic images with sub-second back-projection ti...

Abstract

The present invention provides a method, system and program product for implementing techniques for backprojecting images from projection data sets (200, 300, 600). The technique includes partitioning the projection data into a plurality of multi-channel structures (206, 208, 306, 308, 610), each multi-channel structure corresponding to a predetermined number of color channels of a multi-color rendering engine. The divided set of projection data is simultaneously rendered using the color channels of the multicolor rendering engine and intermediate results are obtained for each color channel (224, 324, 626). The intermediate results for each color channel are accumulated to produce separate rendered images (226, 326, 628), wherein multiple images are simultaneously rendered from the projection data set using the separate color channels of the multicolor rendering engine.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of computed tomography, and more particularly to computed tomography backprojection and volume rendering using multicolor channels, graphics rendering engines. Background technique [0002] Volumetric visualization of real-time or recorded images involves not only inspection, but also the structure of volumetric datasets of more fundamental projection data obtained from sensor sources. Most volumes used during rendering are derived from this sensor data. A basic example is computer assisted tomography (CAT) x-ray data. This data is usually a series of two-dimensional projections of a three-dimensional volume. The process of back-converting this projection data into volumes is called tomographic backprojection. The term "tomographic backprojection" or "computed tomography (CT)" is used to distinguish it from signal reconstruction; ie reconstruction of a continuous function (signal) from discrete samples of t...
