[0019] As noted, computed tomography (CT) uses a set of x-ray projections through an object to reconstruct a density image of the object. Cost-effective back-projection of tomographic images is now feasible using off-the-shelf components. Embodiments of a hybrid CPU / graphics card are described herein that accelerate, for example, backprojection of CT images for fan beam, cone beam, helical fan beam, and helical cone beam acquisitions. Specifically, described here is a hybrid approach that uses, for example, the red, green and blue channels of an available multi-color rendering engine in combination with CPU processing of raw projection (sinogram) data. Required preprocessing and post-accumulation, backprojection image data processing to enhance performance.
