Abstract

A routing system that provides transparent routing system failover by checkpointing routing prefixes during normal operation by maintaining a routing prefix table. This prefix table is used to synchronize routes with peer routing systems after the primary route processor fails. The prefix table is managed by the primary route processor and is accessible by the backup route processor at least after the primary route processor fails. After detecting a failure, the backup route processor requests routes from the peer routing system in response to the failure and generates a backup routing database from the routes received from the peer routing system. The standby route processor also compares the route prefixes in the standby route database with the prefixes in the prefix table, and for routes with prefixes that are listed in the prefix table but not identified in the standby route database, send a route withdraw message to the peer routing system.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to routing systems, particularly to failover of routing systems, and more particularly to resynchronization of peer-to-peer routing systems after failover. Background technique [0002] Routers and routing systems provide routing of packets between nodes of a packet-switched network. To enhance the reliability of packet-switched networks, routing systems operating at network nodes may include redundant routing devices. For example, a routing system may include a primary or active route processor that normally performs or manages packet forwarding, and a secondary or backup route processor that takes over if the primary route processor fails. However, switchover (ie, failover) from a primary route processor to a secondary route processor is often a disruptive event. On failover, the secondary route processor should reflect the current state of the primary route processor. Many traditional routing systems use ac...
