Abstract

The present invention discloses a method for coordinated control of machine direction MD and cross direction CD actuators in a paper machine for the manufacture of paper of a certain material. The method includes measuring a plurality of paper properties at regular time intervals to collect paper measurement data. The paper measurement data is manipulated to create a plurality of paper property measurement arrays, which are then mapped to a common resolution. Concatenate common resolution paper property measurement arrays into a larger one-dimensional common resolution measurement array. A common resolution measurement array and an array of past actuator setpoint changes are used as input to a paper machine process model state observer to generate an estimated current internal state of the paper manufacturing process. Concatenates multiple future paper property target arrays into a single target array. An array of future predictions of paper properties is generated using the estimated current internal state of the papermaking process and a paper machine process model.
