Embodiment Construction

[0014] Sending streaming audio and video files via the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) is known to those skilled in Internet communications. Typically, the RTSP protocol requires that some portion of the live media file be sent from the server at the beginning of the streaming session (while buffering some data from the server), and continue to send the remaining data while the streaming data is being displayed or otherwise used. This transport structure allows streaming data to be displayed as it is received at the client in a just-in-time display architecture. However, since the streaming data is sent just in time, ie it is needed or used immediately after it is received, network lag or failure at the server may seriously affect the user quality of experience.

[0015] Accordingly, the present principles provide a system and method for monitoring audio and video data streams sent via a real-time streaming protocol, and seamlessly migrating the stream from a failed or ove...

Abstract

A method for monitoring and migrating a primary server (131a-c) transmitting a real time streaming protocol (RTSP) stream is provided. Backup servers (211a-c) monitor at least one primary server (131a-c) to determining whether the primary server (131a-c) is active. Upon determining that a primary server (131a-c) is inactive, the backup servers (211a-c) take over the connection on which the inactive primary server (211a-c) was streaming data and then take over the transmission of the RTSP stream. The backup server (211a-c) can further derive the position in a file of the next data needed to betransmitted.

Description

technical field [0001] The present principles relate generally to data streaming communications, and more particularly to systems and methods for providing fail over capabilities for real-time streaming communications. Background technique [0002] Various rich media sites increasingly provide consumers with large amounts of audio and video data via the Internet. As a result, streaming data is being sent over the Internet in increasing volumes. [0003] However, the nature of audio and video streaming requires a constant connection to the streaming server for audio / video playback. The Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), described in Internet Working Group document RFC 3550, July 2003, generally specifies that data that must be delivered to a client be transmitted in discrete packets in a relative order. Additionally, if the streaming server encounters a failure that prevents the server from sending further streaming data, the client experience will experience degraded, in...
