Abstract

A control system includes a heater control module and a particulate matter (PM) load module. The heater control module selectively activates an electric heater to initiate regeneration in a zone of a particulate filter and deactivates the electric heater after the regeneration is initiated. The regeneration continues along a length of the particulate filter after the electric heater is deactivated. The PM load module determines a PM load based on an outlet temperature of the particulate filter after the regeneration is initiated.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the control of electrically heated particulate filters. Background technique [0002] The background description provided herein is for the purpose of generally presenting the context of the disclosure. The work of the presently named inventors, to the extent described in this Background section, and description that would not otherwise be considered prior art at the time of filing, is neither expressly nor implicitly considered a violation of this Published prior art. [0003] The engine combusts a mixture of air and fuel to produce drive torque. Engines, such as diesel engines and compression ignition engines, generate particulate matter (PM), which is filtered from exhaust gas by particulate filters. Filters reduce PM by collecting and storing PM. Over time, the amount of PM stored in the filter increases. A full filter reduces exhaust flow relative to a clean filter. [0004] During regeneration, the filter ca...
