Problems solved by technology

Therefore, if there are several TV sets in an ordinary family, several different set-top boxes need to be installed respectively, which increases the expenditure of multiple TV sets.
In addition, it is difficult for viewers with different tastes and viewing habits to adjust an IPG to meet their needs
Moreover, it is difficult for the owner of the family to implement parental control (Parental Control) on several IPGs, if the IPGs are neither related nor communicate with each other

Embodiment Construction

[0044] overall system

[0045] One embodiment of the system is a system having multiple electronic IPG devices that are readily accessible to the user. The multi-IPG system enables users to set information on their respective IPGs while watching TV programs. Each IPG device includes a table guide, a channel guide and a theme guide. Each IPG receives, stores, and displays titles and information of TV programs, and shares part of the information with other IPG devices. The format, some of the functional features associated with IPG are described in U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 09 / 120,488, file dated July 21, 1998, entitled "Regarding Television Programs, Videos, Advertising Information, and Television Program System and method for displaying and recording control interface of table information", the public document of which is hereby cited as a reference herein.

Abstract

A system and method for multiple interactive electronic program guides is used in a system for providing multiple interactive program guides (IPGs) of television programs, wherein different IPGs serve different users respectively. A TV set-top box provides TV programs and program table data for multiple different TVs at the same time. Multiple IPGs share a common database. Thus, an IPG used by the first user in the system can display data that has been added or modified by a second user in the system. Also, added and modified data can affect the first user's right to watch television. In addition, for the competition and conflict of limited resources, such as booking a VCR for video recording, the system will display information or prompt the user to pay attention.

Description

[0001] The present invention is a divisional application of the invention patent application whose international filing date is March 6, 2000 and whose international application number is PCT / US00 / 05887. technical field [0002] The present invention relates generally to interactive electronic program guides (IPGs), and more particularly to systems for managing and displaying multiple IPGs. Background technique [0003] The earliest screen-type electronic program guide (EPG) saves the program information table in the memory, and the memory is connected with the TV receiver, and displays the TV program table information conforming to the screen format on the TV screen at the same time. Early EPGs would overlay TV shows and have very limited interaction with viewers. [0004] Later EPGs improved in terms of interactivity with viewers, and provided Picture-in-Guide or PIG (Picture-in-Guide or PIG) technology to simultaneously display TV programs and EPG content.
