The system (1) comprises a power consuming illumination system (3) for illuminating a crop (11), and a data processing system comprising at least one processor (10) configured to: receive or determine a prediction of a carbon intensity (24) of the power source over a period of time; receiving or determining an attribute of the illumination system (3), the attribute comprising a relationship between a power consumption of the illumination system and a light output of the illumination system (3); receiving or determining a contribution of a light output of the illumination system over the time period to a carbon footprint of the crop or a component of said crop based on a property of the illumination system and a prediction of a carbon intensity (24) of the power source over the time period; receiving or determining one or more radiation constraints of the crop at least for the time period; determining a radiation recipe that minimizes the carbon footprint of the crop or the composition of the crop while satisfying one or more radiation constraints based on a contribution of the light output of the illumination system over the time period to the carbon footprint of the crop or the composition of the crop; and controlling the illumination system (3) to illuminate the crop (11) according to the determined illumination recipe.
