Embodiment Construction

[0015] The disclosed architecture leverages the source application experience of the source application window to generate and manage companion windows. A companion window is a window that is rendered adjacent to the source application experience (eg, next to it, on top of it, temporarily floating across the panel, etc.) at a predictable location and with a predictable user model for invocation and dismissal.

[0016] Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals are used to refer to like elements throughout. In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the application. It may be evident, however, that these new embodiments may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known structures and devices are shown in block diagram form in order to facilitate descriptions thereof. The intention is to cover all modifications, equivalents, ...

Abstract

Architecture that generates a companion window in combination with a source application experience to enable the accomplishment of a side task yet not switch away from the context of the source application. The companion window experience is a window that is rendered proximate (e.g., beside) a user's source application experience, in a predictable location, and with a predictable user model for invocation and dismissal. The companion window allows the user to retain full visual context of the associated source application experience, while rendering activities that directly pertain to the source application experience or activities that allow the user to interact with two applications.

Description

Background technique [0001] Users are increasingly using their computers to watch media, read articles, and play games, engaging in activities where users expect an immersive full-screen experience. Typically, applications and websites designed for these activities wrap the full screen, or as many portions of the screen as the underlying platform provides. If the user wants to perform related activities to support the source application experience, there is currently no easy way for the user to perform these related accompanying activities in order to allow the user to maintain the visual relationship accompanying the activities. [0002] For example, if the user wants to post a link to a newspaper article to the user's social networking site, or if the user wants to project a movie being watched on the laptop to the user's TV, there is currently no way for the user to perform these related accompanying activities in order to allow the user to maintain the visual relationship...
