Embodiment Construction

[0084] The present disclosure relates to a multi-channel imaging device whose overall z-height is reduced relative to a similar specific single-channel imaging device, and which is relative to the parallax problem that is currently causing problems in reconstructing images from the respective sub-images of each channel. The existing multi-channel imaging equipment has been improved.

[0085] figure 1 The general principles of the present disclosure are shown. The objective optical element 100 includes a micro lens array formed of individual micro lenses 102.

[0086] As used in this disclosure, the term "microlens" generally refers to any refractive optical component that is part of an array with other refractive optical components.

[0087] Microlenses can take various different forms. According to an embodiment, the microlens may include an array of microconvex lenses, which may be formed using a replication technique, for example. According to another embodiment, the microlens...

Abstract

The present invention relates to multi-channel image sensors. More specifically, it discloses an image sensor including a pixel array and an image sensor objective lens optical element. The element is formed by a microlens array. Each microlens in the array directs incoming radiation onto a different specific pixel or sub-array of pixels in the pixel array. The microlenses in the array are shaped such that the fields of view of every other adjacent microlens (ie, two microlenses separated from each other by another microlens) do not overlap until an object distance away from the microlens array.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related applications [0002] This application claims priority to the UK patent application with application number 1102711.7 filed on February 16, 2011, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. Technical field [0003] The present invention relates to improvements to or related to multi-channel image sensors, and in particular to multi-channel image sensors including composite imaging geometry. Background technique [0004] Digital image sensing based on solid-state technology is well known, and the two most commonly used types of image sensors are charge coupled device (CCD) sensors and complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors. Digital image sensors are incorporated in a variety of devices in consumer, industrial and defense, and other fields. Typical consumer products incorporating image sensors include, for example, digital still cameras, mobile devices such as mobile phones, webcams, laptop and desktop computer...
