Embodiment Construction

[0099] The present invention generally relates to devices, methods and systems for delivering agents to subjects at various levels of spinal anatomy, particularly various dorsal roots (DRs), more particularly various dorsal root ganglia (DRGs). For example, one aspect relates to methods for directly delivering a medicament, e.g., a medicament, to at least a target spinal anatomy, e.g., to at least one DRG, wherein the medicament is stored in a drug release module and delivered to the target anatomy via a drug delivery element, e.g., to at least one DRG. A target DRG. In another aspect, the invention relates to an apparatus for direct delivery of a medicament, eg, through the intrathecal space and / or the epidural space, to at least a target spinal anatomy.

[0100] In some embodiments, the devices, methods and systems may further be used to enable direct and specific electrical stimulation, eg, neurostimulation of a target anatomy, such as the DRG, in conjunction with the deliv...

Abstract

The present invention is directed generally to systems, devices and methods for direct delivery of agents, e.g., pharmaceutical agents, to target spinal and neuronal anatomies, e.g., the dorsal root ganglia (DRG), for the treatment of various disorders, particularly pain and pain related disorders, such as chronic itch, sensory disorders, multiple sclerosis, post-herpetic neuralgia and the like. The system, devices and methods of the invention encompass the agents to be delivered to the target anatomy alone or in combination with electrical stimulation. The delivery device and systems and methods as disclosed herein place the distal end of the delivery element, which comprises at least one agent delivery structure, and optionally at least one electrode, in close proximity, or in contact with or next to the target spinal anatomy, e.g., DRG. A variety of agents can be delivered using the device, including sodium channel blockers, biologics, neuroinflammatory modulators, toxins etc., to selectively neuromodulate the neurons. Agent delivery and / or electrical stimulation can be automated and / or can be controlled automatically or by a pre-determined program, or by a patient control pump (PCA).

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 418,721, filed December 1, 2010, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to methods, devices and systems for neurostimulation of targeted neuroanatomical structures, particularly dorsal roots and dorsal root ganglia. Such methods, devices and systems include agent delivery alone or in combination with electrical stimulation to treat various symptoms, especially pain and pain-related disorders. Background technique [0004] Pain associated with diabetes and cancer affects more Americans than heart disease. In fact, approximately 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain and spend approximately $100 billion annually on treatment. Unfortunately, many of the strongest existing pain relievers have serious side effects including addiction, dependence and in...
