Embodiment Construction

[0015] Administering certain medical substances in aerosol form is beneficial when the patient is on a ventilator. These medical substances may be drugs, anesthetics, or other substances or mixtures with beneficial effects such as saline solutions. Because the medical substance is delivered directly to the lungs, it is particularly suitable for treating lung injuries and relieving discomfort due to ventilator operation. Certain medical substances are prescribed as PRNs, which allow a patient to receive a medical substance by request, subject to restrictions imposed by physicians on the frequency of dosing. The disclosed system enables a patient to initiate a dose of a PRN medicinal substance within imposed constraints, which increases patient comfort while reducing nurse workload.

[0016] In the following detailed description, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the present disclosure. It will be apparent, however, to one ...

Abstract

A system and method of controlling the administration of a medical substance is disclosed. An aerosol generator is configured to aerosolize a medical substance and administer the aerosolized medical substance to a patient using a ventilator. The patient is provided with a patient control interface through which the patient initiates the administration of a dose of the aerosolized medical substance. A processor is configured to control the ventilator and the aerosol generator in response to the patient control interface such that the patient controls the administration of the aerosolized medical substance in accordance with limits on the administration of the medical substance.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to systems and methods for delivering therapeutic aerosols to a patient, and more particularly to the control of administration of an aerosolized medical substance by a patient using a ventilator. Background technique [0002] People who have been seriously injured or have undergone major surgery may have trouble breathing themselves. To ensure adequate oxygen intake in the lungs, a ventilator may be used to mechanically assist or replace spontaneous breathing. Positive pressure ventilators work by increasing the pressure in the patient's airway with the aid of a patient device such as a mask or a tracheal or tracheostomy tube. Positive pressure encourages air to flow into the lungs. When the ventilator lowers the pressure, the elastic contraction of the chest wall causes the lungs to contract and expel a volume of air. [0003] Medications such as bronchodilators are usually administered to patients on a ven...
