Embodiment Construction

[0036] 1. System overview

[0037] The animation system 100 is used to generate animation meshes for use in computer animation, a number of embodiments of which are described below. In general, these examples employ figure 1 The overall approach shown. In some examples, the animation mesh can be used to impart videotaped facial movements and expressions of a human subject to a prototype mask of a human face to render an animated image sequence. In some examples, the animation mesh can be directly or modified (eg, based on an associated skeleton) to impart facial motion and expression to a non-human mask (eg, that of an animal or monster).

[0038] For an overview of the system 100 see figure 1 Provided below, a more detailed description of the components of the system is provided in subsequent sections. In general, the system begins with capturing a sequence of image frames of an object 102 using the 3D camera 104 . The output of this camera consists of a sequence of fram...

Abstract

In one aspect, in general, parallel image and depth maps are acquired of a subject using a three-dimensional camera on a common and dense set of pixel locations. A twodimensional mesh animation is determined based on motion tracking in the acquired images. The two-dimensional mesh animation is then combined with the depth maps for form three-dimensional mesh animation suitable for rendering.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority from US Application No. 12 / 987,363, filed January 10, 2011, the contents of which are hereby incorporated in their entirety. Background technique [0003] The present invention relates to mesh animation using means such as image tracking. [0004] Most modern three-dimensional (3‐D) computer animation production systems describe the body structure of animated characters in a simplified way, such as using a grid composed of points to describe the facial shape of a character. To facilitate animation, a "skeleton (rig)" is usually established by defining a number of animation variables to control the position of one or more points on the grid. As you animate the character, the animation variables are adjusted hour by hour. [0005] For example, to animate a scene where a character speaks, an animator can adjust one or more animation variables to give motion to the corresponding parts of th...
