Problems solved by technology

This can reduce the stability of the network because the failover path now has a significant increase in traffic, which can cause traffic already on that path, traffic switched to it, and the link or bridge in the affected path to be utilized performance degradation of any other business
Furthermore, this block switching of traffic to the failover path can thus overwhelm the links and bridges in the failover path, effectively disabling those elements
In this way, cascading network failures may occur due to repeated switching of business blocks and resulting failover failures

Abstract

Nodes in a communication network select between equal-cost shortest paths (ECSP) using a split tiebreaker. The node advertises multiple system identifiers (IDs) for the node, and each system ID is associated with a different set of service IDs that distinguish different virtual networks in the network. This node receives the set of system IDs of every other node in the network. After constructing multiple different ECSPs between two nodes, the node selects one of the ECSPs for each service ID used between the two nodes. For the service ID, the node uses a system ID associated with the service ID of each node in the path to construct a path ID for each ECSP. Due to the configuration of system IDs and service IDs in the network, services affected by the failure will be distributed across multiple surviving ECSPs.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present invention relate to the field of computer networking; more specifically, to the use of split tiebreakers in 802.1aq networks. Background technique [0002] Ethernet is a networking protocol defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), which includes the 802.3 standard that specifies the physical layer and the 802.1 standard that specifies the network layer. Ethernet was invented to allow Local Area Networks (LANs) and allow "plug and play" networking with very little configuration. Over time, Ethernet has expanded to provide additional functionality and support alternative network topologies. As used herein, the term "Ethernet network" refers to a network that implements one or more of the 802.1 family of protocols including, for example, 802.1, 802.1Q, 802.1ad, 802.1ah, 802.1Qay, 802.1Qbp, or 802.1aq. [0003] IEEE 802.1aq has been developed to support advanced virtualization, enable multipath r...
