Problems solved by technology

However, other joints at the hip and knee often need to compensate for lost ankle motion, making walking braces prone to fatigue
Additionally, the walking brace is large and bulky, with a stiff brace shell and large soles to fit the shell
Some walking braces with wobbly bottoms have thick soles, which can cause hip displacement when the thickness does not match the patient's other feet
Added weight and height make it difficult to use a walking brace, resulting in an unnatural gait that may cause further knee or hip discomfort

Abstract

] Described herein are systems and devices for providing an orthopedic walking brace having a housing and a sole with a curved distal surface. The housing is configured to encompass and immobilize a patient's ankle against flexion. The distal surface of the sole has a posterior region, a mid region, and an anterior region. The posterior region is configured to lie under a heel portion of the patient's foot, and the mid region is configured to lie under a center portion of the patient's foot. The anterior region is configured to lie under an anterior metatarsal and toe portion of the patient's foot, and has an Anterior-Posterior curvature that increases from a posterior side of the anterior region toward a middle portion of the anterior region and decreases from the middle portion toward an anterior side of the anterior region.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application No. 61 / 792,129, filed March 15, 2013, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] Orthopedic ankle casts and braces are designed to limit ankle motion during rehabilitation from injuries such as ligament tears, ankle sprains, tibial stress fractures, and ankle fractures. Ankle casts are typically injection molded from rigid materials such as plaster or fiberglass. It supports the lower body, holds the foot in a neutral position, and immobilizes the ankle. The cast is typically worn for several weeks or months, preferably without weight on the joint, to allow proper treatment of broken bones and torn ligaments. [0004] In further rehabilitation and strengthening of the ankle after initial stabilization of the injury, a walking brace is used in lieu of a cast to continue to immobilize the ankle while allowing ...
