The invention provides SYMBOL SELECTION FOR SWIPE BASED AUTHENTICATION. A method includes receiving swipe pattern sensed information from a touchscreen device representative of a user attempting to swipe an authentication pattern to authenticate the user, displaying a set of multiple different symbols including a user known symbol when the swipe reaches a known point in the authentication pattern, receiving a selection of the user known symbol, and authenticating the user based on proper selection of the user known symbol and completion of the authentication pattern.
