[0017] in Watson TM In a question answering (QA) system, such as a QA system, a large amount of content is searched to find the correct answer to an input question. Therefore, the quality and accuracy of the answers provided by the QA system are directly related to the quality of the content the system uses to search for the answers (ie, the quality of the content captured by the QA system). The quality and value of content that a QA system searches may vary, and therefore, if all content is processed equally, time is wasted and / or the accuracy of answers can be affected by the search and rely on content that is of lower relative value than others. Accordingly, it would be advantageous to facilitate content searches and analysis performed by QA systems such that such searches and analyzes can focus on those portions of the content that are The value is relatively higher than other parts of the content.

Abstract

Mechanisms are provided for dynamically selecting a subset of candidate answer sources for use by a question and answer (QA) system. The QA system receives an input question for which an answer is sought and generates one or more queries based on the input question. The QA system selects a subset of candidate answer sources, from a group of candidate answer sources, based on a ranked listing of candidate answer sources. The ranked listing of candidate answer sources is generated based on characteristics of previous candidate answers generated by the QA system for previously input questions. The QA system applies the one or more queries to the subset of candidate answer sources and generates at least one candidate answer for the input question based on results of applying the one or more queries to the subset of candidate answer sources.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present application relates generally to improved data processing apparatus and methods, and more particularly to mechanisms for associating corpus / corpus values from answered questions. [0002] With the increased use of computing networks, such as the Internet, humans are currently overwhelmed and overwhelmed by the amount of information available to them from a variety of structured and unstructured sources. However, during the search for information on various topics, information gaps abound as users attempt to aggregate what they find relevant. To aid in such searches, recent research has involved generating question answering (QA) systems that can take input questions, analyze the questions, and return results indicating the most likely answers to the input questions. A QA system provides an automated mechanism for searching in a large collection of content sources (eg, electronic documents), and analyzing these content sources against ...
