Embodiment Construction

[0022] In an example scenario, satellite-based navigation systems (or Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)) are the most widely used technology for position estimation. However, GNSS can be very unreliable in indoor environments due to poor satellite visibility and multipath related issues. Furthermore, such navigation systems can be configured to provide only two-dimensional (2D) positioning information, since information along the third dimension can be very unreliable for positioning applications. However, in an indoor environment such as a multi-story building, it may not always be sufficient to give a user a location in only two dimensions; furthermore, it may be important to provide information about the floor the user is currently navigating from. For example, in applications such as search and rescue, floor estimation accuracy is more important than 2D positioning accuracy. Therefore, floor determination is an important feature of a comprehensive 3D indoor locali...

Abstract

In the described example of a method (1300) of position estimation in a multi-floor environment, the method (1300) includes performing (1302) a wireless scan to receive information from one or more access points from among a plurality of access points Wireless signals from the plurality of access points respectively positioned at a plurality of locations on one or more of the plurality of floors within the multi-floor environment. Compute (1304) a first set of RSSI measurements corresponding to the wireless signal. Absolute floor position information is determined (1306) based on the first set of RSSI measurements and a predefined objective function. The predefined objective function is configured to maximize a probability that a user is located at a floor to receive the wireless signal. A user floor location is determined (1308) based on the absolute floor location information. A user location is estimated (1310) based at least in part on the user floor location.

Description

Background technique [0001] Recently, the technique of indoor positioning methods within position estimation techniques has become extremely popular due to its vast and diverse applications, such as indoor navigation, search and rescue, asset tracking, healthcare, and mobile advertising. In an example scenario, satellite-based navigation systems (or Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)) are the most widely used technology for position estimation. However, GNSS can be very unreliable in indoor environments due to poor satellite visibility and multipath related issues. Furthermore, such a navigation system can be configured to provide only two-dimensional (2D) positioning information. However, in an indoor environment such as a multi-story building, it may not always be sufficient to give a user a location in only two dimensions; furthermore, it may be important to provide information about the floor the user is currently navigating from. For example, in applications such...
