Embodiment Construction

[0012] Embodiments of apparatus, systems, and methods for overhead detection of head-mounted display (HMD) devices are described herein. In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the embodiments. One skilled in the relevant art will recognize, however, that the techniques described herein may be practiced without one or more of the specific details, or with other methods, components, materials, and the like. In other instances, well-known structures, materials, or operations are not specifically shown or described to avoid obscuring certain aspects.

[0013] figure 1 is an illustration of an HMD according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. HMD 100 is shown as a wearable computing device in the form of an eyeglass frame; in other embodiments, the HMD may be in other forms that provide a near-eye optical display to the user.

[0014] In this embodiment, the frame of HMD 100 includes a central...

Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure describe an on-head detection process for an HMD device comprising at least one lens, an optical sensor placed in front of the lens to detect light reflected from the lens, placed in at least one image source in front of the lens, and a frame member for supporting the lens and the image source for wearing on a user's head, wherein the frame member includes a flexible frame member so as to flex, thereby The optical sensor moves closer to the at least one lens when the HMD is worn by a user. In some embodiments, the optical sensor is positioned to also detect reflected light from the user's face. When the user is wearing the HMD, the light received by the optical sensor is stronger, and therefore an embodiment determines whether the user is wearing the HMD based on the optical sensor data.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to the field of computing devices, and more particularly, to head-mounted displays (HMDs). Background technique [0002] A head-mounted display (HMD) is a display device that is worn on or near a user's head. HMDs typically incorporate some kind of near-eye optics in order to display images within a few centimeters of the human eye. A display with one eye is called a monocular HMD and a display with two eyes is called a binocular HMD. Some HMDs only display computer-generated imagery (CGI), while other types of HMDs are capable of superimposing CGI over the real-world view. The former type of HMD is often referred to as virtual reality (VR), while the latter type of HMD is often referred to as augmented reality (AR), because the image of the viewer's world is enhanced with CGI overlaid on it, also known as VR. It is the head-up display (HUD). [0003] Because HMDs incorporate increasing amounts of comput...
