Embodiment approach 1

[0091] Embodiment 1. An absorbent article comprising:

[0092] first basis; and

[0093] a copolymer that is irreversibly bound to the first substrate to form the core,

[0094] Wherein the copolymer is derived from:

[0095] a first monomer selected from (meth)acrylic acid or a salt thereof;

[0096] a second monomer, wherein the second monomer is hydrophilic; and

[0097] greater than 1% by weight of a third monomer, wherein the third monomer is a hydrophilic crosslinking monomer,

[0098] wherein at least 50% of the acidic functional groups in the core are neutralized by the salt-forming cations.

Embodiment approach 2

[0099] Embodiment 2. The absorbent article of embodiment 1, wherein the second monomer is selected from the group consisting of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxypropyl (meth)acrylate, 3-hydroxypropyl (meth)acrylate, N , at least one of N-dimethylacrylamide and acrylamide.

Embodiment approach 3

[0100] Embodiment 3. The absorbent article of any one of the preceding embodiments, wherein the copolymer comprises at least 1% of the second monomer.

Abstract

Described herein are absorbent articles and methods of making such articles. The articles are made by bonding a copolymer onto a substrate to form a core. The absorbent articles are particularly useful in personal care product, e.g., disposable hygiene products.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention describes absorbent articles comprising a polymer bonded to a substrate to form a core, as well as methods of making such articles useful in personal care products. Background technique [0002] Personal care products for absorbing body fluids are known. Such products include adult incontinence products, diapers, training pants, feminine care products, wound dressings and more. Traditionally, such personal care products usually contain some amount of cellulosic fibers, such as wood pulp fluff. Wood pulp fluff is known as a suitable absorbent for body fluids. Typically, 1 gram of wood pulp fluff is capable of absorbing about 5 grams to about 8 grams of expelled bodily fluids, such as urine. Personal care products, such as baby diapers, typically have an absorbent capacity of at least about 200 grams to 400 grams of urine. Accordingly, when forming such baby diapers from wood pulp fluff, a relatively large amount of wood pulp fl...
