Embodiment Construction

[0021] The following description generally refers to optical assemblies in which one or more optical elements are mounted in a barrel cavity.

[0022] Referring to Figure 2 and Figures 2A to 2C, an optical assembly 20 according to a first embodiment is shown. Optical assembly 20 includes a barrel 24 that defines a cavity 32 . Lens barrel 24 may be embodied by any housing structure in which optical element 22 is to be mounted, aligned and held in place. A typical lens barrel, such as the one shown here, includes a hollow cylindrical housing 30 having an inner wall 34 and an outer wall 36 . At least a part of the inner wall 34 of the lens barrel 24 is provided with a set of internal threads 42a, which will be further described below. The hollow portion of the cylindrical housing 30 forms a cavity 32, which may have any shape suitable for receiving the optical element 22 therein. The cavity 32 has a central axis B, which is defined as the axis of symmetry.

Abstract

An optical assembly in which one or more optical elements are mounted in a barrel cavity. The optical element has a curved abutment surface that engages a mount disposed in the cavity. The lens barrel has an inner wall provided with a set of internal threads. External threads are provided on the peripheral wall of the optical element or on the peripheral wall of a retaining ring that secures the optical element within the cavity. The internal and external threads have thread profiles including load flanks perpendicular to the central axis of the cavity. The thread profile may for example define a sawtooth thread profile or a square thread profile.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to optomechanical systems, and more particularly to an optical assembly having one or more optical elements mounted in a barrel cavity using threads designed to avoid tilting of the optical element within the cavity. Background technique [0002] Optical elements or components are ubiquitous in devices, systems or arrangements where light needs to be directed, expanded, focused, collimated or otherwise transformed or affected. Optical elements may, for example, be embodied by lenses, mirrors, diffractive optical elements (DOEs), assemblies of such elements, and the like. [0003] In a typical optical system, most or all optical components often need to be precisely positioned and aligned in order to properly perform their intended optical functions. Such positioning and alignment typically involves securing the optical elements in some type of holder or assembly. Proper alignment of optical elements relative to the holde...
