[0017] This document describes systems and techniques for locking a rotary actuator. In general, the rotary actuators described herein include a rotor that rotates relative to an outer housing. The rotor includes a mechanism that can be actuated to cause one or more keys to extend radially from the rotor. The keys extend into axial grooves (non-circumferential recesses) formed in the inner diameter of the outer housing. The extended key is reversibly captured within the recess and mechanically limits or prevents rotation of the rotor relative to the outer housing. In an example aircraft application, the rotor may be configured to control the position of a control surface (e.g., flaps, rudder, or aileron) relative to the wing to which the outer casing is attached, and in a locked configuration, lock the rotation The actuators are capable of maintaining the relative position between the control surfaces and the wing.

Abstract

The subject matter of the present description can be embodied, inter alia, in a locking device for a rotary actuator, wherein said locking device comprises an outer housing comprising a cylindrical inner surface with a recess. The rotor is arranged inside the housing. The rotor has a lumen and a port extending radially from the lumen to the outer surface of the barrel. A piston is configured to reciprocate within the cavity between a first position and a second position and includes a first portion having a first thickness and a second portion having a second thickness greater than the first thickness. A key is configured to reciprocate radially within the port and includes a radially proximal portion and a radially distal portion. When the piston is in the first position, the radially proximal portion contacts the first portion and the radially distal portion does not extend into the recess.
