Abstract

The purpose of the present invention is to improve data detection capabilities by whitening cross-talk noise from an equalized signal and carrying out binary data detection. In the present invention, multi-input adaptive equalization processing is carried out on the optical feedback generated when light is projected, to an optical recording medium on which a plurality of tracks are formed, in a range that includes a data-detection-object track and tracks adjacent thereto, to obtain an equalized signal by inputting each of a plurality of detection signals generated by using the light reception signals of a plurality of divided regions of an optical detection unit to a plurality of adaptive equalizers respectively, and calculating the output of the plurality of adaptive equalizers. The cross-talk noise, from the adjacent tracks, contained in the equalized signal obtained by the multi-input adaptive equalization processing is whitened, and further, binarization is carried out. An equalization error is found from an equalization target obtained on the basis of binary detection results, and the equalized signal obtained by the multi-input adaptive equalization processing. Such equalization error is supplied to the plurality of adaptive equalizers as a control signal for adaptive equalization. In addition, carried out is whitening coefficient update processing in which the filter coefficient of a whitening filter is adaptively updated.
