Abstract

The object of the present invention is to improve the data detection capability by whitening the crosstalk noise from the equalized signal and performing binary data detection. In the present invention, within the scope of the track including the data detection object track and its adjacent track, the multi-input adaptive equalization process is performed on the optical feedback generated when projecting light on the optical recording medium formed with multiple tracks, by inputting each of a plurality of detection signals generated by using light-receiving signals of a plurality of divided regions of the optical detection unit to a plurality of adaptive equalizers, respectively, and calculating outputs of the plurality of adaptive equalizers, to obtain a balanced signal. Crosstalk noise from adjacent tracks contained in the equalized signal obtained by the multi-input adaptive equalization process is whitened, and further binarized. An equalization error is found from an equalization target obtained based on binary detection results and an equalized signal obtained through a multi-input adaptive equalization process. This equalization error is provided to a plurality of adaptive equalizers as a control signal for adaptive equalization. In addition, whitening coefficient update processing is performed in which the filter coefficients of the whitening filter are adaptively updated.
