Embodiment Construction

[0043] The following description is merely exemplary in nature and is not intended to limit the disclosure, application, or uses. It should be understood that throughout the drawings, corresponding reference numerals indicate like or corresponding parts and features.

[0044] In order to increase the effectiveness of vehicle-based collision countermeasures against rear-end, lane-departure, and lane-change collisions, rear-end and lane-evasion collision warning systems have been developed. However, such systems have inherent disadvantages in that their effectiveness is low and driver acceptance is limited. These shortcomings include erroneous judgments of stopped vehicles and obstacles in the road by the rear collision warning system, and map errors and misidentification of lane markings by the lane departure collision warning system.

Abstract

The present application discloses a method for detecting a forward collision. A safety system for a motor vehicle includes: a dedicated radio to receive and transmit status data between a host vehicle and a remote vehicle; a global positioning system (GPS) receiver; an on-board unit (OBE) to perform vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V ) communication such that the host vehicle receives status information of the remote vehicle in a Basic Safety Message (BSM) format; and a safety control unit. Specifically, the safety control unit receives the status data of the host vehicle and the remote vehicle, calculates the distance, estimates the horizon time, and then compares the estimated horizon time with the driver's reaction time to generate a warning to the driver. More specifically, when the subtracted estimated time-to-horizon is greater than zero, the safety control unit executes an estimate routine to determine variable coefficients for estimating future positions and velocities of the host vehicle and the remote vehicle.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to a method and system for a vehicle that predicts a collision situation of the vehicle in advance and warns the driver. Background technique [0002] The statements in this section merely provide background information related to the present disclosure and may not constitute prior art. [0003] The automotive industry strives to develop various technologies and systems to provide drivers with a safe and comfortable driving environment. Many vehicles already have instruments that use radar or ultrasound to detect obstacles or vehicles. For example, a photographing unit installed at the front of the vehicle captures images of objects in front of the vehicle and processes the captured images to determine any impending collision situation and warn the driver. However, this application is limited to the range where the photographing unit can photograph images and no other obstacles (eg, surrounding vehicles) exist between t...
