Abstract

An apparatus for authenticating a vehicle in a vehicle-to-vehicle communication environment, comprising: a communication unit configured to receive a basic security message and an authentication message from a remote vehicle permitted to participate in the vehicle-to-vehicle communication; and a controller configured to act as the communication unit The remote vehicle is determined to be authentic when at least a predetermined number of authentication messages are received from the remote vehicle within a predetermined period of time, and when the controller determines that the remote vehicle is authentic, permission is generated to utilize the basic security message received from the remote vehicle.
