Embodiment 1

[0106] Opaque white toothpaste compositions having the formulations described in Table 1 were prepared by well known methods. After preparation, the toothpaste was stored at 40°C and the stability of the toothpaste was checked. The pH, viscosity and fluoride content of the comparative compositions (compositions A and B) and the compositions of the invention (composition 1, composition 2) were measured immediately after preparation and after one month of storage at 40°C. All tests were performed again on all compositions after 2 and 3 months storage at 40°C.

Abstract

The present invention relates to stable toothpaste compositions with zinc salts for providing antimicrobial benefits. It would be highly desirable to provide toothpaste compositions with antimicrobial benefits that have enhanced user acceptability. Therefore, it is desirable to improve the performance of zinc salts in toothpaste compositions, and which deliver maximum benefit without compromising other benefits derived from the toothpaste composition. The present inventors have discovered that toothpaste compositions with calcium-based abrasives and zinc salts effectively deliver the antimicrobial benefits of zinc in the presence of smectite clay and buffers with minimal stability issues during storage.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to stable toothpaste compositions having zinc salts for providing antimicrobial benefits. Background technique [0002] The antimicrobial benefits of zinc in personal care compositions are generally recognized. Incorporation of zinc in toothpaste compositions provides an anti-plaque effect due to the antimicrobial properties of zinc. [0003] Zinc is relatively non-toxic, non-accumulative, and an essential trace element that, when used in toothpaste compositions, acts as a plaque inhibitor or as a calculus inhibitor. Despite the known benefits of zinc salts, their use, especially in toothpaste compositions, has certain undesirable disadvantages. [0004] The side effects of incorporating zinc salts in toothpaste compositions are particularly pronounced when calcium-based abrasives are present. Calcium-based abrasives react with zinc ions, resulting in the precipitation of zinc hydroxide and the release of carbon dioxide...
