Embodiments pertaining to speaker systems for generating near-field sound patterns for rendering immersive audio content in portable devices. The driver array projects sound upward from the top surface of the portable device to form an up-firing speaker; the speaker assembly projects sound downward from the bottom surface of the portable device to form a down-firing speaker. The decoder / renderer component receives immersive audio content, decodes height audio signals from that content, and sends direct audio signals to down-firing speakers. The crossover performs a high pass filter function to pass the high frequency components of the decoded height audio signal to the upward firing speakers and the low frequency components of the decoded height audio signal to the downward firing speakers.
