Abstract

A multi-element vascular stent can be used to maintain or enhance the patency of blood vessels. The stent may be used in peripheral vessels that may be long and / or tortuous. By using multiple individual balloon-expandable stent elements, the multi-element stent can be stronger than traditional self-expanding stents, but can be more flexible than traditional balloon-expandable stents due to its multi-element configuration. The distance between the stent elements can be based on the characteristics of the stent and the location of the target vessel such that the stent elements do not contact each other during movement of the bone. Thus, the multi-element vascular stents described herein may be particularly advantageous for treating long lesion sites in tortuous peripheral vessels.
