Problems solved by technology

[0004] At mmWave frequencies, conventional antennas can induce strong surface waves in the chassis (housing) of the mobile device that distort the radiation pattern emitted by the antenna elements
This distortion may result in poor operational performance and may prevent antenna array applications

Embodiment Construction

[0037] Embodiments will now be described with reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals are used to refer to like elements throughout. It will be understood that the drawings are not necessarily to scale. Features described and / or illustrated with respect to one embodiment may be used in the same or similar manner in one or more other embodiments and / or in combination with or instead of features of other embodiments.

[0038] Described below with reference to the accompanying drawings are various embodiments of antenna structures that may be used with a mobile terminal, such as a mobile phone. While the figures illustrate one antenna, it will be understood that a mobile terminal may include an array of antennas for beamforming or scanning applications.

[0039] refer to Figure 4 , illustrating an exemplary environment for the disclosed antenna. An exemplary environment is an electronic device 24 configured as a mobile wireless telephone (more commonly refer...

Abstract

A balanced planar antenna having at least one mmWave resonant frequency includes a ground plane, first and second antenna elements, an arm that connects the second antenna element to the ground plane,a feed line connected to the first antenna element and for feeding a radio frequency signal to the first antenna element, and a balun that connects the first antenna element to the ground plane. Theground plane, first antenna element, second antenna element, arm, feed line and balun each are disposed on a substrate and are coplanar.

Description

technical field [0001] The technology of the present disclosure relates generally to antennas for electronic devices, and more particularly, to an antenna supporting millimeter wave frequencies. Background technique [0002] Communication standards such as 3G and 4G are currently in widespread use. The infrastructure supporting 5G communications is expected to be deployed soon. In order to take advantage of 5G, portable electronic devices such as mobile phones will need to be equipped with appropriate communication components. These components include antennas having one or more resonant frequencies in the millimeter (mm) wave range, which extends from 10 GHz to 100 GHz. In many countries, 28GHz and 39GHz are considered available 5G mmWave frequencies. The spectrum is discontinuous in frequency. Therefore, if the mobile device is to support operation at more than one mmWave frequency, the antenna will need to support the frequency of interest. Such antennas are sometime...
