[0037] A series of different packing elements were tested in a cold hydrodynamic column to determine the stripping efficiency of stripping helium from an FCC equilibrium catalyst using air. Two embodiments of the contacting element of the present invention were tested in which the baffle sections 14 were arranged at an angle of 60 degrees to the vertical axis of the column. In the first embodiment, the staggered baffle sections 14 form a diamond shape having a height of 7.5 inches and a width of 4.33 inches. The corresponding dimensions of the second embodiment are 5.0 inches high and 2.88 inches wide. Contact elements were tested against corrugated plates having a bead height of 2.5 inches with a corrugation angle of 60 degrees and conventional disc and ring trays. The test results were then analyzed using a staged efficiency model in which one disc or annular tray corresponds to one stage.
