Abstract

An apparatus includes a conduit including an inlet to receive a liquid and an outlet to discharge the liquid. And a first porous electrode, a second porous electrode, and a third porous electrode disposed in the conduit between the inlet and the outlet. The first porous separator is interposed between the first porous electrode and the second porous electrode. The second porous separator is interposed between the second porous electrode and the third porous electrode. The power source is configured to provide power to the first porous electrode, the second porous electrode, and the third porous electrode. When a liquid flows through the conduit, the power source provides a first type of voltage to the first and third porous electrodes and a second type of voltage to the second porous electrode, the second type being opposite the first type.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Application Serial No. 16 / 431,047, filed June 4, 2019, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. Background technique [0003] Removing bacteria and other harmful organisms from water is an important process, not only for drinking and sanitation, but also for industry, as biofouling is a widespread and serious problem. Traditional methods for water sterilization include chlorination and membrane-based approaches. Unfortunately, both types of approaches suffer from certain drawbacks. [0004] Chlorination is generally a slow process involving incubation times of up to an hour or more to allow adequate dissipation of chlorine species through the water to be treated. Furthermore, chlorination produces dangerous oxidation by-products (including carcinogens), and chlorination equipment can be capital intensive from a deployment and maintenance standp...
