Embodiment Construction

[0039] Sharpening devices 10, 10' constructed in accordance with embodiments of the present invention are shown in various views in the drawings and described below.

[0040] The sharpening device 10 has a tool body 100 that includes a handle portion 110 having a forwardly projecting support member 150 . The handle portion 110 is configured to be gripped comfortably by one hand, and its lower surface is surrounded by a finger guard 120 . The handle portion is elongated with rounded and contoured upper and lower surfaces for user comfort and grip. The handle portion (or section thereof) may include a "soft touch" coating of elastomer or other suitable polymer for increased user comfort and grip. A thumb positioning recess 112 is provided on the front upper surface of the handle portion 110 adjacent to the connection portion to which the support member 150 is connected. During use, as described further below, the operator grasps the handle portion 110 with one hand with the fi...

Abstract

A device for sharpening a bladed tool comprises a body defining an elongate handle portion adapted to be gripped by one hand of a user, the body having a forwardly projecting support member curved or inclined downwardly relative to the handle portion and fitted at or near its end with a sharpening element, wherein the support member comprises a pair of spaced apart support arms extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal extension of the handle portion, the support arms positioned to respective sides of the sharpening element and defining an aperture therebetween, the aperture adapted to receive a blade or anvil of a tool during sharpening of a corresponding tool blade.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an apparatus for sharpening bladed instruments, including garden tools and the like. Background technique [0002] Garden tools with blades for cutting, such as tall branch shears, pruning shears, secateurs, knives, broadswords, hoes, spades, axes, hatchets, etc., should maintain a sharp cutting edge for safe and efficient operation. Maintaining a sharp edge on a blade can be challenging for many reasons. [0003] Due to the construction of the garden tool, the cutting edge of the garden tool is difficult to access. For example, secateurs are scissors-like tools with a pair of pivoting handles, and may have a single cutting blade (anvil type) or two cutting blades (bypass type) that close against a flat surface. For ease of handling, the handles of the secateurs are usually spring-loaded so that they are normally open, but this means that the separation of the blade or blade and anvil is limited, thereby limiting acce...
