Embodiment Construction

[0026] One embodiment of the present invention includes a fiber structure that can be used to form a utility pole in the form of an elongated composite beam having a hollow polygonal cross-section and having layers similar to the prior art fiber structures described above, but with Those layers are arranged differently. The exterior of the hollow polygonal cross-section has a plurality of substantially planar sides and corners between each pair of adjacent sides. The interior of the cross section is shaped such that it is significantly thicker near each corner. The fiber structure provides reinforcement to the resin, which impregnates the fiber structure, thereby forming a composite structure generally in the form of a hollow tube or rod.

[0027] As shown in FIG. 4 , the layers of an embodiment of the fibrous structure of the present invention, in order from the outer surface to the inner surface, may include a face felt 50, a fabric layer 152, a corner region 162 of longitu...

Abstract

A fiber architecture in the form of an elongate beam having a hollow polygonal cross section with a plurality of substantially flat exterior sides and a corner between each pair of adjacent exterior sides. The cross section is substantially thicker adjacent each corner. The fiber architecture includes a first fabric layer extending around the beam, a layer of circumferential longitudinal rovings extending around the beam adjacent the outside of the first fabric layer, corner longitudinal rovings coterminous and integral with the outside of the circumferential rovings adjacent each corner, and a second fabric layer extending around the beam adjacent the outside of the corner rovings and adjacent the outside of the circumferential rovings not covered by corner rovings. The fabric architecture may be impregnated with resin to form a composite pole that may be used as a utility pole.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This non-provisional United States (U.S.) patent application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 60 / 373979, entitled "Composite Pole Laminate Construction," filed April 19, 2002 by inventors David C. Hayes and Daniel J. Lonergan Right, the U.S. Provisional Application No. 60 / 373979 is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a fiber structure and a utility pole. Background technique [0004] As shown in FIG. 1, utility pole assembly 20 may be constructed with some or all of its component parts made of a composite material such as fiberglass reinforced resin. The outer surface of the composite material is usually smooth to deter animals from climbing the utility pole. The utility pole does not harbor bacteria or generate debris that would be harmful to maintenance personnel. The composite material can be an insulating material, which can reduce the am...
